Square Enix Says Guardians of the Galaxy Game Sales Fell Below Expectations

Last year, Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game surprised fans with its excellent single player gameplay. The game was also widely praised for its story and performances. This was especially notable since Square Enix’s previous comic book inspired game, Marvel’s Avengers, quickly turned off fans with its repetitive gameplay and micro-transactions. Unfortunately, the good will towards Guardians didn’t result in strong sales. And according to Square Enix itself, Guardians of the Galaxy sales failed to meet its expectations.

Square Enix made the disclosure during an official briefing for investors and stockholders.

“Despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations. However, sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start.”

Unfortunately, that appears to dash any hopes that a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 game would get a fast greenlight. Regardless, there’s still potential for a Guardians sequel. If Square Enix’s initiatives can significantly increase the game’s sales, that would indicate that there’s a demand for more. For now, it may simply be a one and done franchise despite winning over the majority of fans who purchased it.
