Sméagol is of Two Minds In The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s New Teaser

Gollum wasn’t always a sick and twisted individual. As seen in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels and their cinematic adaptations, Gollum was once a Stoorish Hobbit named Sméagol. However, the One Ring changed Sméagol, both physically and mentally. As Gollum, Sméagol has always had either a supporting or an antagonist role in Tolkien’s tales. But that will change next year when he headlines The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a new video game from Daedalic Entertainment. During The Game Awards, Deadalic debuted The Lord of the Rings: Gollum‘s new teaser, which illustrates his two personalities.

When Sméagol is in control, he is capable of kindness and even some level of compassion. But in Mordor, the only thing that Sméagol knows is fear. By contrast, Gollum is all anger and hate for anything that isn’t his beloved “precious.” And if some pesky orcs get in the way of Gollum’s quest, then they simply have to die.

As you can see in the trailer above, Gollum isn’t much of a fighter. But he can be lethal in the right circumstances. According to Daedalic, gamers will be able to choose which personality is ascendant in the game

“Your decisions and how you play have a direct influence on Gollum’s personality: Always struggling between his two selves embodied by Gollum and Sméagol, it is up to you to decide whether you let darkness take over, or that spark of reason left in what was once a sun-loving hobbit. One mind, two egos – you decide!”

Additionally, the game will explore previously untapped episodes of Gollum’s life, from his captivity in Mordor to his time among the Elves in Mirkwood. This is Gollum’s untold story, and he will stop at nothing until he reclaims what was once his.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows in 2022.
