Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City Director Talks Game Fealty

The Resident Evil franchise will return to big screens as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City hits theaters in a few months. The upcoming live-action movie reboot will take a different route than the one seen in the Milla Jovovich-led movie series. And while director Johannes Roberts confessed that he loved 2002’s movie by Paul W. S. Anderson, he also said in a new  interview with IGN that fans should expect an ensemble piece like in the video game saga. In other words, we’ll finally see the stories of Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon Kennedy.

“Milla just created such an iconic character,” he said. “But it was its own thing. It wasn’t really Resident Evil as I knew it – the previous movies never captured the game and the feelings I got when playing the game (that’s not a criticism I think it just went in a different direction). I wanted to go back to the horror of it all. I wanted scares and atmosphere rather than full-on action.”

IGN also debuted a batch of promotional photos that include a closer look at the protagonists and Lisa Trevor.

When asked about his sources, Roberts stated that he looked at the recent Resident Evil 2 game remake in addition to some John Carpenter films like Assault on Precinct 13.

“This movie really had nothing to do with the previous franchise. This was all about returning to the games and creating a movie that was much more a horror movie than the sort of sci-fi action of the previous films. I was hugely influenced in particular by the remake of the second game and I really wanted to capture the atmosphere-drenched tone that it had. It was so cinematic.”

According to the producers’ plans, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will debut in theaters on Nov. 24.
