A New Transformers AR Game is in the Works From the Developer of Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go’s popularity more or less fizzled out roughly a year after it launched in 2016. Regardless, this isn’t stopping its developer from trying its hand at another beloved property. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Niantic is currently working on a new augmented reality game based on Hasbro’s Transformers.

The game is called Transformers: Heavy Metal, and it allows fans to join the Guardian Network, an outfit of humans who battle alongside Autobots, like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, in their war against the Decepticons. Players can either team up with friends or fight solo in a series of turn-based battles. Seattle’s Very Very Spaceship studio is leading the game’s development with help from Niantic’s Lightship AR platform. Additionally, Niantic has shared some early concept art for Heavy Metal, which you can view above.

Niantic CEO John Hanke also shared a new statement about the upcoming project.

Transformers is the perfect franchise for AR. Battling and interacting with giant robots in the real world is an amazing experience. We want to live up to the high expectations of Transformers fans around the world and bring them a game unlike anything they’ve played before.”

Aside from Pokémon Go, Niantic also released Harry Potter: WIzards Unite. The studio has also received praise for Ingress and Ingress Prime.

Transformers: Heavy Metal will have a soft launch in select markets before debuting globally later this year.
