WB Games Montréal Announces Gotham Knights at DC FanDome

Rumors about Warner Bros. Montréal’s next DC game have been swirling around for the past couple of years. Now, the developers behind 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins have finally unveiled their new project. But instead of controlling the Dark Knight, gamers will have the chance to play as four other members of the Bat Family. During today’s DC FanDome festivities, the studio announced that Gotham Knights will hit video game consoles next year.

The trailer opens with a pre-recorded message where Bruce Wayne confirms the reports of his death. From this, we can surmise that the game picks up after the events of 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight, which ended with Bruce revealing his double-life to the world and appearing to die in an explosion that left Wayne Manor in ruins. Fortunately, his city is in good hands, as Bruce has left Gotham in the care of Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, and Red Hood.

Gotham Knights’ trailer was introduced by Shazam! star Zachary Levi. Additionally, WB Games Montréal’s Patrick Redding and Fleur Marty were on hand to discuss why they chose to tell a story featuring this group of characters.

“We wanted to shake up the status quo of Gotham City,” said Redding. “We wanted to see what happens when you take away the safety of Batman’s presence and then find out what happens when these heroes […] have to step up and take on the role of new protectors of Gotham.”

“You’re not trying to become the new Batman,” added Marty. “You’re becoming your own badass superhero.”

Redding and Marty also debuted a few minutes of gameplay footage captured from a recent pre-alpha build. The footage shows Batgirl and Robin attempting to stop Mr. Freeze from unleashing his storm engine on Gotham. By the looks of things, Gotham Knights will feature more of the smooth combat system that made the Arkham series shine, albeit tweaked to give each individual hero their own unique fighting style.

Gotham Knights will be released sometime in 2021.
