New Lord of the Rings Video Game Will Redesign Gollum

It’s been almost a year since Daedalic Entertainment revealed that they were developing a new video game headlined by everyone’s favorite corrupted Hobbit, Gollum. Now, Edge has the scoop on what Lord of the Rings fans can expect when the game arrives in 2021. For their latest issue, the magazine visited Daedalic’s headquarters in Germany to learn more about what they’re planning. You can check out the issue’s cover via Twitter below.

When The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was first announced, many fans immediately wondered if Andy Serkis would reprise his iconic role from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like this will be the case. According to senior producer Kai Fiebig (via ScreenRant), their version of Gollum won’t even be based on Serkis’ likeness.

“We don’t want to displease the folks who have only seen the movies,” said Fiebig. “But in short, he doesn’t look like Andy Serkis. We started with the person he was and then evolved him. You can see that this was once something like a human being, before the Ring corrupted him. We have more storytelling possibilities than the movies ever had, and for us, it was very important to show a different set of emotions. We need somebody you could almost love, and on the other hand somebody you can really be afraid of. And at some points, trust me, you will fear him.”

Serkis’ performance as Gollum in Jackson’s films remains iconic to this day. However, the character has been tackled in other forms of media over the last several decades. Gollum made his earliest onscreen appearance in 1977 in Rankin/Bass’ animated take on The Hobbit. He also showed up in Ralph Bakshi’s animated The Lord of the Rings film in 1978. Additionally, Vivendi Universal released its own Hobbit video game in 2003 that featured its own interpretation of Gollum. But where Jackson’s films opted to give him a “human” appearance, these other adaptations made him more reptilian.

Edge’s cover story also revealed a few other characters that will show up in the game, which takes place in between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Via USgamer, fans can also expect to see Legolas’ father, Thranduil, as well as the notorious Ringwraiths.
