Matt Reeves has shared a new update about a potential The Penguin Season 2.
The Penguin premiered on HBO and Max in September 2024. The eight-episode series, set within The Batman Epic Crime Saga, sees Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobb after initially playing the character in 2022’s The Batman, which was directed by Reeves.
While Farrell will return in The Batman Part II, many have wondered if a second season of The Penguin is coming after the first season was widely beloved by fans and critics. Reeves previously said that “everything is on the table” when discussing a potential The Penguin Season 2 with The Hollywood Reporter last month.
Farrell has also said that, while he doesn’t particularly love putting on all the makeup and prosthetics to play Oz, he would be willing to return for another season.
What did Matt Reeves say about The Penguin Season 2?
Speaking with Zoë Kravitz for Variety’s Directors on Directors, Reeves confirmed that there were still ongoing conversations being had about The Penguin Season 2.
“Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience,” he said. “I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
At this time, The Penguin Season 2 has not been officially greenlit by HBO.
The first season of The Penguin also stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante/Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, Michael Zegan as Alberto Falcone, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Mark Strong as Carmine Falcone, Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush, and Jared Abrahamson as Squid.
All eight episodes of The Penguin are now available to watch on Max.
