James Hawes has been tapped to direct the first two episodes of Lanterns.
Lanterns is the forthcoming DCU series that will star Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern Hal Jordan. John Stewart will also be featured in the series, though that part has not yet been officially cast at this time.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hawes has now been tapped to direct the first two episodes of Lanterns.
Hawes has directed six episodes of the popular Apple TV+ series Slow Horses, which stars Gary Oldman. He has also directed episodes of Doctor Who, Merlin, Penny Dreadful, Black Mirror, Snowpiercer, Raised by Wolves, and more.
Hawes made his feature film directorial debut in 2023 with One Life, a biographical drama about British humanitarian Nicholas Winton that stars Anthony Hopkins. He’s now working on an espionage thriller titled The Amateur, which is expected to be released in April 2025. It stars Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.
What else do we know about the DCU Lanterns series?
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis for the show reads.
Produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, Lanterns is written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Mundy will serve as showrunner, while Lindelof and King serve as executive producers.
While DC Studios has not yet officially announced who will be playing John Stewart alongside Chandler’s Hal Jordan (a role that Josh Brolin was originally circling, though he ultimately passed on the opportunity), Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre and Homecoming’s Stephan James are both believed to be the studio’s top picks at this time. Damson Idris was also previously rumored to be in consideration for the role.
A release date for Lanterns has not yet been announced.
