Agatha All Along Creator Teases What the M-Like Sigil on Joe Locke’s Teen Means

Agatha All Along’s first two episodes left viewers with several mysteries, including the M-like sigil covering Joe Locke’s Teen’s mouth. It has spawned several theories, with one even bringing back Mephisto. But, Agatha All Along creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer has teased where the sigil comes from.

In the second episode, an M-like sigil appears on Teen’s mouth when he speaks his name in front of Agatha. The sigil aims to hide Teen’s true identity from Agatha and the fans. But Jac Schaeffer has revealed the inspiration behind its design.

Talking to The Wrap, the showrunner said that it comes from the idea of runes which were prevalent in WandaVision. “I think the idea behind the sigil was a variety of things. We really loved doing the runes in ‘WandaVision,’ which was then carried into Doctor Strange’s world,” she shared.

Schaeffer continued, “So it was a thing that was in our witchy playbook, that was carried forward in the MCU. And so we really wanted to do more of that kind of thing with the show.” Further revealing what it is, she said that the sigil works like a redaction bar. It originates from a spell that hides Teen’s identity.

“For the aesthetic on his mouth, the original idea was that it was a redaction bar, because that is what the spell is. It’s something being held back in a manner that is – it’s a spell that’s kind of clumsy. Like, a more sophisticated spell would just hide the whole thing, but it sort of shows its amateur-ness,” Schaeffer added.

The Agatha All Along creator further stated, “So the original idea that I wrote was that it was a redaction bar, that sort of had that ‘rrrr’ sound that goes with it. But then we wanted it to feel at home with our sort of larger witchy aesthetic, which has more sort of lyricism to it.”

Whether the sigil will return in the upcoming episodes remains unknown as of writing. But with its design looking a lot like the letter ‘M,’ several theorists suggest that Mephisto could be the one who cast a spell on Teen. However, the demon lord’s presence in the show is yet unconfirmed.

Agatha All Along returns on Disney Plus on September 25.
