Lanterns: Kyle Chandler Being Eyed to Play DCU’s Hal Jordan

Kyle Chandler is being eyed to play Hal Jordan in the DCU Lanterns series.

Lanterns is a new series that comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. The series will follow Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a mysterious murder case.

Josh Brolin was previously in the running to play Hal Jordan in the DCU series; however, it was reported earlier this month that Brolin turned the offer down.

Now, per Deadline, Kyle Chandler is believed to be in negotiations to take on the role of Hal. Chandler’s casting has not yet officially been confirmed at this time. The search for someone to play John Stewart is still ongoing.

Chandler is known for playing Eric Taylor in NBC’s Friday Night Lights. He has starred in movies such as 2005’s King Kong, 2009’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2011’s Super 8, 2012’s Argo, 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, 2015’s Carol, 2016’s Manchester by the Sea, 2018’s Game Night, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and 2022’s Slumberland.

What else do we know about the DCU Lanterns series?

Lanterns will be an eight-episode series produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Mundy will serve as the showrunner and is co-writing the show with King and Lindelof. Mundy, King, and Lindelof all serve as executive producers.

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis for Lanterns reads.

Ryan Reynolds notably played Hal Jordan in the 2011 Green Lantern movie, which was intended to start a film franchise but ultimately did not given its critical and commercial failure. The character, who was created by John Broome and Gil Kane, has also appeared in numerous animated projects over the years.

A release date for Lanterns has not yet been officially announced.
