Marvel Exec Explains Why the Avengers Wouldn’t Work as a Disney+ Series

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t be heading to the small screen anytime soon according to Marvel Studios producer Brad Winderbaum.

While the Avengers have been depicted on the small screen in animated form several times, most notably in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010-12) and Avengers Assemble (2013-19), they have never assembled in a live-action series. However, this hasn’t stopped members of the Avengers from appearing in a live-action show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Clint Barton/Hawkeye headlining his own self-titled Disney+ series while Bruce Banner/Hulk guest starred in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In an interview with CinemaBlend to promote Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, Winderbaum explained why MCU fans will never see the Avengers assemble on the small screen despite considerable interest from the fandom.

“I think the Avengers are about, there came a day when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes had to assemble. In a feature film, which is a statement piece, it makes sense that there’s an event that galvanizes them all. I think that on a long-form television show, it becomes more of a challenge to have, ‘There came a day’ every day,” he said. “In the comics, you can do it. It’s the Marvel universe, and there’s just spectacular things happening all the time.”

Winderbaum continued, “[If] you read the comics, you know that the Avengers really assemble so that they can disassemble, and then assemble again, and then disassemble again. Is it possible? Yes. But from a narrative point of view, it becomes like ascension and descension, which … it could be really interesting for a long-form story. But it would be a very unique pattern for a television show.”

When will the Avengers reassemble next?

At the time of writing, the Avengers have so far appeared in five MCU movies — Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are set to reassemble at least two more times in the MCU, beginning with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which will see Robert Downey Jr. step into the role of Doctor Doom. The team will also appear in the direct sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.

A Young Avengers project has also been teased. The post-credits scene of The Marvels (2023) featured Ms. Marvel approaching Kate Bishop/Hawkeye about founding their own superhero team, with Cassie Lang mentioned as another possible member. However, Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce such as project.

All four Avengers movies can be streamed on Disney+.
