Marvel Studios‘ upcoming Vision series will see James Spader reprise his role as Ultron.
Spader played the villainous Ultron in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was written and directed by Joss Whedon. The character, who was originally created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, was made by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to protect the Earth; however, the artificially intelligent being becomes sentient and attempts to wipe out humanity.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Spader will once again play Ultron in Marvel’s new, still untitled Vision series.
Ultron was notably responsible for creating Vision, though the plan didn’t play out as Ultron intended as Vision decided to side with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes rather than help him destroy the planet.
It’s not immediately clear how Ultron will return in the Vision series, given that he was seemingly destroyed at the end of the 2015 Avengers movie.
Along with playing Ultron in the MCU, Spader is known for starring in movies such as 1986’s Pretty in Pink, 1987’s Wall Street, 1989’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape, 1994’s Stargate, 2002’s Secretary, and 2012’s Lincoln. He also played Robert California in The Office and starred as Raymond “Red” Reddington in The Blacklist.
What else do we know about Marvel’s Vision series?
Paul Bettany is once again reprising his role as Vision, a character who was killed 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War but was then brought back, now in a pale white form, in 2021’s WandaVision.
Terry Matalas serves as the showrunner on the series. Plot details remain largely under wraps, though The Hollywood Reporter notes the show “tackles white Vision’s search for a new purpose in life.”
Marvel’s Vision series is expected to begin filming in 2025. A release date has not yet been set.
Another WandaVision spin-off, Agatha All Along, is debuting on Disney+ this coming September. The series sees Kathryn Hahn reprise her role as Agatha Harkness, while Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, and more also star.
