Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Will Feature a Key Hulk Character, Reveals Head Writer

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man head writer Jeff Trammell recently opened up about who from the comics fans can expect to see in the upcoming Disney+ animated series.

Formerly known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, the upcoming animated series is set within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe Multiverse, following a timeline where Tony Stark never mentored Peter Parker. Instead, Norman Osborn, voiced by Colman Domingo, will serve as both Peter’s mentor and his “man in the chair,” a role occupied by Ned Leeds in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man film trilogy.

With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man not canon to the Holland-led movies, Marvel Studios Animation is free to take the fan-favorite web-slinger in a new direction. This includes giving him a new set of friends. Trammell recently swung by The Official Marvel Podcast (via ComicBookMovie.com) to chat about the upcoming cartoon, where he revealed a list of familiar names from the comics that will serve as Peter’s friend group in the series.

“There are so many characters that aren’t prototypical Spider-Man characters that we got to introduce in this series,” Trammell shared. “The big one is Nico Minoru of the Runaways. I’m a huge fan of that series and Nico. I’m very excited that she’s in our show.”

The head writer added, “There’s Pearl Pangan, Lonnie Lincoln . . . there’s a few characters we’re familiar with from other series as well as Spider-Man classic characters we’re excited to mix it up I’ll also say, Amadeus Cho and Jeanne Foucault will appear in our series. There’s a lot of cross-pollination from the comics within this world I’m excited to dig into.”

As Trammell noted, Nico Minoru is part of the Runaways in the comics, while Pearl Pangan is an obscure character with the ability to control water whose codename is Wave. Lonnie Lincoln is the civilian identity of the classic Spider-Man villain Tombstone. Amadeus Cho has aided both the Hulk and Hercules in the comics, before becoming a Hulk himself in 2015. Lastly, Jeanne Foucault is believed to be Taskmaster’s daughter and is a member of Avengers Academy.

Who else will appear in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man?

Besides the aforementioned names, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will feature at least three prominent superheroes: Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and Iron Man. Charlie Cox is confirmed to be reprising his role from the MCU as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, while voice actors for Doctor Strange and Iron Man have not been announced yet.

While plot details remain under wraps, Trammell told The Official Marvel Podcast that fans should “expect the unexpected,” teasing that the series will twist some parts of the Spider-Man mythos that fans believe they know.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2024, although an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.
