What is Batman: Caped Crusader about?
“In the series, the corrupt outnumber the good as criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear in Gotham City,” the description of the series reads. “Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.”
Originally announced in 2021 as an HBO Max series before Amazon Prime Video acquired it in 2023, Batman: Caped Crusader is executive produced by Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm.
J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register serve as executive producers alongside Timm.
Timm told Entertainment Weekly that Batman: Caped Crusader will be a 1940s-set period piece. “[Character designer James Tucker] and I are both really big fans of movies from that era, so we decided to really lean into that in terms of the clothes, the cars, the architecture, and the level of technology,” Timm explained. “Early on, we decided there would be no computers and no cell phones. That changed everything.”
He added about the Dark Knight’s character in Batman: Caped Crusader, “He’s a really weird human being. He’s not obsessed with his parents’ murder, but it changed him in a way where he’s still not adjusted to being a human being. He’s literally Batman; inside, that’s who he is. Whenever he’s Bruce Wayne, that’s not just him with a mask off, that’s him wearing a person suit. He’s trying to pretend to be something that he’s not.”
