The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Anthony Mackie Explains Why He Wanted a Season 2

Actor Anthony Mackie recently expressed disappointment over Marvel Studios’ decision to bring back his character, Sam Wilson/Captain America, in the forthcoming Captain America: Brave New World instead of in a second season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Speaking with RadioTimes.com, Mackie explained why he really wanted to do another season of the Disney+ limited series, which released its six-episode season in March and April 2021. “The Falcon and [the] Winter Soldier, I really enjoyed doing that show. I was actually excited to do a second season, just so me and Sebastian [Stan] can get paid to hang out,” he said. “Because it’s like me, him and Daniel Brühl. It’s kind of like the perfect storm of happiness.”

The actor added, “When they decided to go back to the movies, it is what it is, but I don’t have my friends anymore, so it kind of dampens it a little bit.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gets a physical release

Although initially intended to be a Disney+ exclusive series, the Walt Disney Company announced in March 2024 that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and fellow Marvel series Moon Knight would be released on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on April 30, 2024.

The physical media release comes with Steelbook packaging, concept art cards, new bonus features, and the Assembled Disney+ documentary about the making of the limited series. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Moon Knight are the latest Marvel Disney+ series to get physical releases after WandaVision and Loki were released on the same format last year.

Captain America heads back to the big screen

Captain America: Brave New World will mark Mackie’s first time leading a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as Captain America after assuming the mantle in the series finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While Sebastian Stan and Daniel Brühl will not be returning for Brave New World as their respective MCU characters Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier and Helmut Zemo, Mackie will be joined by his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star Danny Ramirez, whose Joaquín Torres is set to become the next Falcon.

The movie’s ensemble cast also includes Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra.

Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters on February 14, 2025.
