Carl Weathers, The Mandalorian Star, Dies at 76

Carl Weathers, who starred as Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise and also starred as Greef Karga in Disney+’s Star Wars series The Mandalorian, has passed away at the age of 76.

Weathers’ family announced the news in a statement (via Deadline), confirming that the actor passed away in his sleep on February 1, 2024. The statement remembers Weather as “a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” the statement reads. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Weathers is best known for his roles in the Rocky franchise, where he starred as Apollo Creed in the first four films and as Colonel Al Dillon in the 1987 sci-fi action movie Predator.

Weathers also had several other high-profile roles, including playing Combat Carl in the Toy Story franchise, playing a fictionalized version of himself in the comedy series Arrested Development, and, most recently, a recurring role in The Mandalorian as Greef Karga, a role in which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2021.
