Cheo Hodari Coker, the creator of the Netflix Luke Cage series, has taken to social media to respond to backlash he received over the show’s depiction of race.
In a series of tweets, Coker replied to a fan who mentioned that Luke mostly fought black people in the show instead of white people. Coker joked that he was “trying to keep Black people gainfully employed.”
Coker went on to note that people “actually complained” that white people didn’t have a speaking part for the first 13 minutes of the series. This was in reply to a fan who mentioned that him fighting white people would have also caused a stir.
“A white person didn’t have a speaking part for 13 minutes and major dialogue until minute 29. People actually complained. Scarfe’s scene in the club got cut, so it wasn’t even intentional,” said Coker.
Following its cancellation in 2018, Luke Cage and most of the Netflix Marvel projects were left in a state of limbo. However, following release of Echo, the Netflix Marvel series have been added to Disney+’s official MCU timeline.
When were the Netflix Marvel series released?
The first Marvel show made for Netflix was Daredevil, which had its first season debut on April 10, 2015, while its second and third seasons dropped in 2016 and 2018.
All of the Netflix Marvel shows — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Like Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — were released between 2015 and 2019, with the final installment — Jessica Jones Season 3 — dropping on June 14, 2019.
