Smallville stars and friends Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) and Tom Welling (Superman) recently discussed if they would ever be interested in reprising their popular roles for a feature-length continuation of the DC superhero series.
Welling recently appeared on Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You (via Screen Rant) to celebrate its 300th episode. The conversation between the two actors, who also co-host the Smallville rewatch podcast Talk Ville, naturally shifted to their time on the beloved Superman prequel series, prompting Rosenbaum to ask Welling if he’d ever consider doing a sequel movie.
“If they would come up with an idea for a Smallville movie or five years later or let’s say they say ‘We have this idea, it’s still before you become Superman and it’s this little window here, and it’s going to be on Netflix,’ would you consider it,” asked the Lex Luthor actor.
“I mean, I’d be ‘Yes, let’s hear it.’ I don’t know how it would happen,” Welling said. “I mean listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our Talk Ville Podcast, we were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television like Top 50.”
He added, “From that show, I’ve never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work. I don’t mean to, I’m not saying like I don’t feel bad about that, I don’t harp on anybody about that. But you would think that when you’re successful, you would be continued successful with successful people. But I think the time has changed.”
The Smallville stars previously worked on an animated continuation
Smallville aired on The CW from 2001 to 2011, airing 217 episodes across 10 seasons. The series was pitched with a “no tights, no flights” rule, meaning Clark Kent could never wear Superman’s iconic costume or fly in the show.
In June 2021, Welling shared that he was working on an animated revival with Rosenbaum that would continue the story of Clark Kent after Smallville Season 10. Unfortunately for fans, there have been no updates on the project since 2022.
