George R. R. Martin on the First 2 Episodes of House of the Dragon Season 2: ‘Very Dark’

George R. R. Martin has seen rough cuts of the first two episodes of House of the Dragon’s second season.

Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, shared on his blog that he has seen rough cuts of the first two episodes of House of the Dragon’s sophomore season. While admitting he might be biased, Martin said the episodes were “just great” and “very dark”.

“Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work … but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet),” Martin wrote. “Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like. (What can I say?  I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all).”

Martin said that he also spent several days discussing House of the Dragon’s third and fourth seasons with showrunner Ryan Condal and the series’ writing staff. “They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done…though two days was not nearly enough,” Martin wrote. “There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.”

Set before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon’s first season premiered on Max in 2022. It was renewed for a second season just five days after the series premiere. The first season starred Paddy Considine as King Viserys, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Milly Alcock as a younger Rhaenyra Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower.

House of the Dragon Season 2 launches on Max in the summer of 2024.
