Loki Season 2 executive producer and head writer Eric Martin has offered his insight on the superhero fatigue issue.
In an interview with Esquire, Martin was asked about the state of the superhero genre in movies and television after box office woes of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe. In response, the Loki showrunner said he believes that the fan support for the genre will be there as the quality of the project is strong enough.
“I don’t think anyone knows where Hollywood is going from year to year,” Martin said. “I think we all have guesses. At the end of the day, it just comes down to making things that people want to see. And I haven’t noticed less engagement, because my experience is all with Loki. I’m not sure with anything else, but I haven’t seen any dip in enthusiasm. I’ve seen an increase.”
In the case of Loki, the Nielsen streaming rankings of 446 million minutes of viewing time over the first three days of the second season’s debut were 39 percent lower than the 731 million minutes of viewing for Season 1’s premiere in 2021. However, with the arrival of the Kang variant Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) and the implosion of the multiverse later in the season, interest in the series picked up steam. Loki’s Season 2 finale, “Glorious Purpose,” would attract 11.2 million viewers worldwide during its first three days of release.
Martin continued, “The fans of the show seemed like they’ve only gotten more excited about it. So, I don’t know what to read. We can all kind of decipher that how we will. But I think we made a good show and people like it. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about–you make something that’s quality. You can connect with the audience, and the audience is going to connect with you.”
