The Boys will be back for its fourth season in 2024, following a successful first season for its spin-off Gen V — and the latest update gets fans up to speed on the story that the two Prime Video shows share.
The official X (formerly Twitter) account for The Boys made a post in its usual in-universe style that uses the speech patterns of Karl Urban‘s Billy Butcher. The bulleted list of “what we can say about Season 4 so far” included some clarification of the timeline and also a couple teases about major events that the next season will tackle. “Homelander will stand trial for lasering a Starlighter’s head off,” one item on the list states, referring to a murder at the end of Season 3 that paved the way for Antony Starr‘s narcissistic villain to go completely rogue.
Another tease about Season 4 reads, “Butcher knows about the virus,” which indicates that a major story arc from Gen V won’t be resolved just yet. Butcher himself showed up at the end of the latest episode of Gen V, but has yet to interact with anyone or reveal his purpose.
The post also confirmed that Season 4 of The Boys will lead into Season 2 of Gen V, and that there’s an approximately one-month gap in the timeline between the respective Season 4 and Season 1. It’s noted that viewers don’t need to watch both shows to understand what’s going on, although of course they’re encouraged to.
Origins of The Boys and its spin-off, Gen V
The Boys, based on a series of comics of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, premiered on Prime Video in 2019. The show imagines a world in which superheroes are real, but paid and promoted by a megacorporation, Vought International, which engineered the drug that imparts powers. As a result, “supes” are viewed as celebrities and concerned only with their image, and many of them have become selfish, spoiled public idols.
Gen V adds a twist to this scenario by focusing on young supes who are attending Vought’s Godolkin University, already immersed in the corporation’s propaganda as they prepare for lives under the spotlight.
New episodes of Gen V drop on Fridays on Prime Video, with the season containing eight episodes in total. The Boys Season 4 will premiere in 2024.
