Marvel Studios has created a new Marvel Spotlight banner that will focus on more “grounded” stories over larger MCU continuity.
Per Deadline, Marvel has announced that Echo will be the first Marvel title to debut under a new Marvel Spotlight banner. The sub-category, which comes with a new intro scored by Michael Giacchino, gets its name from an anthology comic book series that debuted in 1971.
Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming for Marvel Studios, said, per Marvel.com, “Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”
Titles beyond Echo that will fall under the Marvel Spotlight banner have not been announced at this time.
Echo arrives on Disney+ and Hulu in January 2024
Echo, which will be the first TV-MA Disney+ series, stars Alaqua Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Chaske Spencer, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, and Cody Lightning.
“The five-episode streaming event spotlights Maya Lopez (Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (D’Onofrio) criminal empire,” the synopsis reads. “When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy. All five episodes will stream on Jan. 10 on both platforms. They’ll be available on Hulu until April 9. This marks the first Marvel Studios series to drop all entirely bingeable episodes at once.”
Created by Better Call Saul’s Marion Dayre and serving as a spin-off to 2021’s Hawkeye, all five episodes of Echo debut on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024.
