Daredevil: Born Again Undergoing Creative Overhaul as Marvel Changes TV Strategy

Steven DeKnight Talks Daredevil: Born Again Production Shake-up

Steven DeKnight, the former showrunner of Netflix‘s Daredevil, has weighed in on the production overhaul of Disney+‘s Daredevil: Born Again.

On X, DeKnight responded to a user after he expressed relief about Marvel Studios’ plans to shift to serialized television instead of limited series on Disney+. When the user remarked how the former Daredevil showrunner was happy to see Born Again get scrapped, DeKnight pushed back.

“I am not happy the show is scrapped and have consistently stated the opposite,” DeKnight said. “However I AM delighted that they finally realized you need an actual showrunner who’s a writer to make a series work.”

Daredevil: Born Again’s massive overhaul

DeKnight’s comments come following a report from The Hollywood Reporter that Marvel was relieving Daredevil: Born Again head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman of their duties. Production on the series was put on pause halfway through shooting amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes. Marvel reportedly was displeased with the completed footage leading to Ord and Corman’s exit. Additionally, the series’ directors were quietly let go as Marvel plans “a significant creative reboot” for Born Again. Though completed scenes may still be used in the revamped version, Marvel aims to make Born Again closer in tone to DeKnight’s original Netflix series.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprises his role as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin alongside Charlie Cox as the Man Without Fear, pushed back against similar comments by another X user in the wake of the Born Again shake-up.

“Every cool project I’ve been involved with has evolved constantly during pre-production, production and post,” D’Onofrio said. “It’s just reported on these days as if it’s big news. It’s not. It’s simple a bunch of creatives doing their best to get it right. It’s a constant in this business. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Frankly I’d be worried if we were settling for less.”

Production on Daredevil: Born Again remains on pause due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
