Rogue One remains one of the most popular Star Wars movies of the Disney era, thanks in large part to its darker take on the Rebel Alliance and an unforgettable Darth Vader appearance. Next month, Andor will revisit the era shortly before Rogue One with Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor. Originally, Lucasfilm envisioned this series as running for five seasons. Those plans were eventually scaled back to two seasons of 12 episodes each. Regardless, Andor creator Tony Gilroy has explained how the show will still chronicle five years in the Rebellion’s history.
While speaking with Empire, Gilroy noted that the first season takes place over the course of a year. But in season 2, every three episodes will cover a year, before reaching the timeframe of Rogue One in the final four episodes.
“The scale of the show is so huge,” said Gilroy. “Directors work in blocks of three episodes, so we did four blocks [in season 1] of three episodes each. We looked and said, ‘Wow, it’d be really interesting if we come back, and we use each block to represent a year. We’ll move a year closer with each block.’ From a narrative point of view, it’s really exciting to be able to work on something where you do a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then jump a year.”

The ending of Cassian’s story isn’t a mystery. He died just like every other main character in Rogue One. That said, Luna told Empire that he was excited to get a chance to further explore Cassian in this show.
“Rogue One is more about an event than the actual journey of [the] characters,” noted Luna. “It’s quite amazing to start a show where it’s not about where we can end – it’s about, how did we end there?”
Andor will have a two-episode premiere on August 31 on Disney+.
