HBO Is Developing a Jon Snow Game of Thrones Sequel Series

It’s not an exaggeration to say that HBO has a half dozen Game of Thrones spinoffs in development. But prior to today, the six projects that we knew about were all prequels, including the upcoming House of the Dragon series. However, a seventh potential series has emerged that may finally push forward the timeline of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire beyond the original show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is developing a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow.

Kit Harington portrayed Jon Snow through all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Although Harington frequently spoke about his desire to move on from the series, THR reports that he is attached to star in the spinoff, should it go forward. For now, there are no writers officially announced for this potential sequel.

In the final episode of the series, Jon Snow was exiled from Westeros despite the fact that we was the only living Targaryen heir. Instead of making a play for the throne, Jon reunited with the Wildlings and returned to the true North beyond the Wall.

THR notes that setting the story beyond the GoT series finale potentially allows other surviving characters like Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) to return as well. The real question is whether the other former cast members want to come back. It’s equally unclear where the story can go after the defeat of the White Walkers and the Lannisters, as well as the death of Daenerys Targaryen herself.

The final episode of Game of Thrones also proved to be very unpopular with many of the show’s fans. It remains to be seen if that backlash will keep House of the Dragon from recapturing the success of the original series. Perhaps we will find out shortly after the prequel series premieres on August 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
