Netflix Is Developing a New Ghostbusters Animated Series

Following the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife last fall, Sony is bringing the franchise back to the small screen. Variety reports that Netflix is developing a new Ghostbusters animated series. Afterlife co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will executive produce.

Sony Pictures Animation leads the charge on the series. However, there’s still no word on who’s writing it or whether it includes any characters from Afterlife. Reitman and Kenan shared the news in honor of today’s “Ghostbusters Day” festivities, which also marks the 38th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters movie hitting theaters in 1984. Apparently, more announcements could also happen later today.

The original Ghostbusters animated series, The Real Ghostbusters — named because Filmation also had an unrelated Ghostbusters cartoon based on an earlier use of the trademark — debuted in 1986. It featured the same characters introduced in the first Ghostbusters film two years prior (though not voiced by the actors who played them on the big screen). The second series, Extreme Ghostbusters, aired in 1997 and featured a new generation of heroes led by Egon Spengler.

This announcement is a surprising one, since Netflix’s animation division has reportedly been in a state of upheaval as a result of recent subscriber losses, which has also prompted Netflix to cancel a number of projects in development. Regardless, Netflix is probably more willing to take a chance on a big-name property like Ghostbusters, with its built-in fanbase.
