A few days after announcing plans to reboot The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hulu has set its sights on another (albeit lesser-known) indie comic to adapt for the small screen. Deadline reports that Hulu has acquired to the rights to AfterShock Media’s A Calculated Man. Additionally, the streaming service has drafted Peter Calloway to act as the show’s writer and executive producer.
If you’ve never heard of A Calculated Man, don’t be surprised — the first issue doesn’t hit comic shops until June 15. But this didn’t stop several platforms from bidding on the screen rights in what AfterShock is calling a “competitive battle” before Hulu ultimately won out. The book, which hails from writer Paul Tobin and artist Alberto Albuquerque, centers on Jack Beans, a former mob accountant. After spending three years in witness protection for betraying his bosses in the Pinafore crime family, Jack returns home. Unfortunately, acclimating to his old life quickly becomes “a journey full of murder, mayhem and mathematics.”
Calloway previously served as an executive producer on HBO’s The Nevers. He was also a writer and executive producer on Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger series. Joining Calloway on A Calculated Man are Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer of AfterShock Media.

“It’s not often that a story grabs you by the throat and heart at the same time,” said Calloway in a new statement. “A Calculated Man did just that. The moment I read Paul and Alberto’s beautifully bonkers book, I was excited to bring it to the screen. Doing it at Hulu – with their commitment to unflinching, unique stories – is a dream come true.”
“We are so excited to have found the perfect home at Hulu,” added Lee Kramer, AfterShock Media’s President of Film and TV. “This was a very competitive situation, but creatively they understood not only our vision for the title and the lead Jack Beans but brought us a writer, Peter Calloway, who we had not only worked with before but also pitched us a concept which was in-sync with both Paul and Alberto’s devilishly fun creation.”
