It’s been nearly a year since Rick and Morty season 5 wrapped up, and we should be getting news about a season 6 premiere fairly soon. But first, Adult Swim has announced that it is teaming up with HBO Max to produce Rick and Morty: The Anime, a ten-episode series that will run on both platforms.
The new anime series will be directed by Takashi Sano (Tower of God), who previously helmed two Rick and Morty anime shorts for Adult Swim. Sano’s first short was Rick and Morty vs. Genocider, and the second was Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil). Combined, both shorts have amassed 10 million views since their debut. Their success directly led to this larger order.
“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” said Sano in a statement. “It’s such a life affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

While the new series will “adapt themes and events of the main series,” it will not be tied to the continuity of the primary show. Instead, Adult Swim states that it will “stand on its own as an original work.”
The new anime show is already in production, with animation provided by Telecom Animation Film, the studio behind Lupin the IIIrd Series, Shenmue the Animation, and Tower of God. Telecom also animated the previous Rick and Morty anime shorts.
Adult Swim didn’t announce a release date for the anime, but it will presumably arrive between Rick and Morty season 6 and season 7.
