Disney+’s Ms. Marvel Series Recruits Composer Laura Karpman

Kamala Khan’s live-action debut is just over three weeks away. Now, Marvel has announced which composer will provide the music for her upcoming adventure. The studio (via Variety) confirmed that Ms. Marvel will feature a score by Emmy winner Laura Karpman.

This won’t be Karpman’s first trip to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She previously scored Marvel’s What If…? animated series on Disney+ last summer and was recently hired to compose the music for The Marvels, which hits theaters next February and will also feature Iman Vellani reprising her role as Kamala on the big screen. Landing the film earlier this year notably made Karpman the second woman to score an MCU feature after original Captain Marvel composer Pinar Toprak.

Some of Karpman’s other credits include HBO’s Lovecraft Country and the Discovery docuseries Why We Hate. The latter show won her an Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special.

“I am thrilled to be a part of a wonderfully diverse team that is bringing Kamala Khan off the pages of her comic book and into your homes this June,” said Karpman in a new statement. “She is an epic superhero hailing from a rich musical heritage that was a joy to be immersed in.”

Scoring Ms. Marvel for Disney+ probably makes Karpman’s job on The Marvels a lot easier. After all, many of her themes for TV show will likely make an appearance in the upcoming film as well. But we still don’t know if she plans to incorporate any of Toprak’s original themes for Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers or WandaVision composer Christophe Beck’s cues for Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau. Honoring the work of their predecessors is something a lot of Marvel composers have struggled with over the years. But since much of Karpman’s work on What If…? paid tribute to earlier MCU scores with a few deviations here and there, perhaps this isn’t something we have to worry about.

Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ on June 8.
