Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K. Animated Series Cancelled After One Season

Unfortunately, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing isn’t returning to the stop-motion realm anytime soon. Deadline brings word that Hulu isn’t moving forward with another season of Marvel’s animated M.O.D.O.K. series.

All 10 episodes of M.O.D.O.K.’s first season premiered on Hulu last summer with Patton Oswalt (who also co-created the series with Jordan Blum) voicing the title character. Taking an irreverent approach to its source material, the show found the iconic supervillain facing a midlife crisis. After being ousted from his role as the leader of A.I.M., M.O.D.O.K. also struggles to maintain his relationship with his two children after his wife asks for a divorce. The series’ voice cast also included Aimee Garcia, Ben Schwartz, Melissa Fumero, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Beck Bennett.

Originally, Hulu intended to launch its own animated Marvel universe with M.O.D.O.K. debuting alongside other shows featuring Howard the Duck, Tigra & Dazzler, and Hit-Monkey. All of these characters would eventually join forces in a crossover special dubbed The Offenders. But once Howard the Duck and Tigra & Dazzler were scrapped, these plans were abandoned. In the end, Hit-Monkey was the only other show to survive the purge and air its own first season last November; and surprisingly a second season is still on the table (for now).

M.O.D.O.K. was also one of the last shows made by Marvel Television before its absorption by Marvel Studios in 2019. This essentially guaranteed that all of Marvel’s future small-screen projects would be made under Kevin Feige’s purview and air on Disney+. Marvel TV’s final live-action series, Helstrom, was similarly cancelled after its own one-season run last fall. The streaming service was also the home of Runaways from 2017 to 2019.
