Somewhere in the afterlife, Marc Spector and Steven Grant freak out when they come face-to-face with the Egyptian goddess Taweret. Marc is so unnerved that he mentally retreats to another asylum, where Arthur Harrow is his psychiatrist. When Marc’s mind sends him back to Steven, Taweret tells them that they are both dead. She also mentions that they are in one of many different versions of the afterlife, but they are the first mortals she has met in a long time. Taweret leads the duo to the deck of her boat, and she weighs their hearts on the scales of justice. If their scales can balance, then they can enter the Field of Reeds. If not, their souls will be consumed in the sands of the Duat and trapped for eternity.
Marc and Steven reenter the ship and take a trip down memory lane. Marc encounters phantoms based on everyone he killed in Khonshu’s name. However, Marc tries to shield Steven from the memory that they once had a younger brother named Randall. While Marc and Randall played Tomb Buster in a cave, they became trapped by rising water and only Marc survived. In the aftermath, Marc’s mother blamed him for Randall’s death and abused him emotionally and physically. Much to Steven’s horror, he watches the moment when Marc’s mind created his alternate persona to protect himself.

Steven and Marc also witness the night that Marc nearly died after crossing his former partner. Khonshu offered a mortally wounded Marc a chance to live as his champion and he claimed him as his “Moon Knight.” Marc and Steven return to the exterior of the boat and witness souls entering the underworld before their time. Tawaret explains that Harrow’s actions in the real world are causing this. But she can’t send them back to a body that is already dead. Regardless, Tawaret changes the course of the ship to bring them Osiris’ gate and their only hope of returning to Earth.
Later, Steven witnesses Marc’s emotional breakdown when he refuses his father’s invitation to mourn for his mother. Steven also sees Marc’s transition into Steven, and his delusion that his mother is still alive and loves him. Steven is forced to acknowledge that his mother is dead, and he offers Marc assurances that he wasn’t responsible for Randall’s death or his mother’s abuse. But their healing journey comes to an abrupt end when the lost souls of the Duat attack them.
When Marc is overwhelmed by the souls, Steven embraces the idea that he is Marc, and therefore capable of fighting them as well. Steven saves Marc, but he falls out of the ship and lands in the sands. Marc pleads for Tawaret to turn the ship around and save Steven, but it’s too late. Steven is frozen in the sand and seemingly lost for good. Tawaret tells Marc that his scales of balanced, and he finds himself transported to the Field of Reeds.
