Melissa McBride Drops Out of The Walking Dead’s Carol and Daryl Spinoff

AMC has no intention of letting The Walking Dead die anytime soon. Although the main series will come to an end this year, one of the many spinoffs in the works was set to feature Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus as Carol Peletier and Daryl Dixon, respectively. Both had been among the most popular characters on the show. However, it looks like Reedus’ Daryl will have to go solo. Via The Hollywood Reporter, AMC has announced that McBride has left the spinoff series before it began.

In a statement, AMC said “Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future,”

As noted above, McBride decided against moving to Europe to film the show. This also appears to confirm that the plan was for Daryl and Carol to leave America behind after the series finale.

According to THR, this doesn’t necessarily mean that McBride is done with the franchise. “Sources say other opportunities for McBride and Carol are being discussed.” What those opportunities include be remains to seen. It’s also likely that the planned spinoff will now need to be retooled around Reedus’ Dixon. Assuming it goes forward at all.

Either way, there’s no shortage of Walking Dead spinoffs on the horizon. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are slated to co-headline a Maggie and Negan spinoff set in New York. There is also a Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series, as well as the first spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead.
