Yesterday, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced the young Cadet Uhura via a character-centric promo. Today, two of the new characters get to shine. Lieutenants La’An and Ortegas serve as head of security and helmsperson, respectively. And while both are technically new, La’An (Christina Chong) has some familiar ties to the Trek universe, as her full name, La’An Noonien-Singh, reveals. What’s interesting is she seems to go by Lieutenant La’An, which would imply that’s her family name and “Noonien-Singh” her given name. She describes herself as a survivor, one who may have been found on a shuttle. Maybe she was sent away from Khan’s Botany Bay before the events of “Space Seed”?
Clearly, we are meant to infer a connection to Star Trek‘s most famous genetically enhanced villain. But his name’s not entirely uncommon in the future, as Data’s creator Noonien Soong could attest. (Also, Khan typically doesn’t hyphenate his name the way La’An does.) Here’s her video:

Up next is Lietenant Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), who appears to have a shared past with Captain Pike at Starfleet Academy.

Looks like a Tholian Web will feature in at least one episode as a hazard for her to fly through.
What do you make of La’An and Ortegas so far? Let us know in comments.
