Before she was apparently allowed to grow her hair out, Star Trek‘s Nyota Uhura was a cadet on Captain Pike’s Enterprise bridge. With sensible pants under the miniskirt, to boot. As Celia Rose Gooding prepares to don the signature earpiece of Nichelle Nichols’ groundbreaking communications officer, Paramount+ releases a quick character-centric video. We know officer Uhura, but it’s time to meet Cadet Uhura, from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
With a vast knowledge of languages, sometimes forced to rely on her own learned skills rather than a universal translator, young Uhura feels more than a little like Enterprise’s Hoshi Sato. Spock certainly appears to be a fan. Will any hints of their realtionship in the Kelvin timeline carry over. Recall that canonically, the half-Vulcan showed a lot more human emotion during his time with Pike.

The bridge appears to have gotten a slight redesign since it last appeared, as well. Trek Core has a run-down of the changes seen so far in this video.
