It’s official: Amazon is betting big on video game adaptations. In addition to new TV shows based on Fallout and Mass Effect, Amazon Prime Video is looking to add another AAA franchise to its streaming library. Deadline reports that Amazon is nearing a deal to produce a live-action God of War series.
Leading the charge on Amazon’s adaptation are The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Additionally, Rafe Judkins, who recently developed The Wheel of Time for Amazon, is involved as well. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are expected to co-produce the series with Amazon Studios.
Santa Monica Studio launched the God of War franchise on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The original game introduced Kratos, a Spartan soldier who served the Greek Gods of Olympus and was ultimately tasked with killing Ares, the titular God of War. Two direct sequels hit stores in 2007 and 2010. And following a string of spinoffs, Santa Monica relaunched the series in 2018 with a new eponymous entry that picked up several years after God of War III and moved the setting to ancient Norway. The next installment, God of War: Ragnarök, is scheduled to bow later this year.

Hollywood has been trying to bring God of War to screens for years. David Self (Road to Perdition) previously worked on a screenplay for Universal before the studio handed writing duties to Patrick Melton and Marvus Dunstan (the Saw franchise). Creator David Jaffe has claimed that Daniel Craig was offered the role of Kratos. But this version of the project never materialized.
