Amazon is Developing a Blade Runner 2099 Series With Ridley Scott

Last fall, Ridley Scott announced that a new live-action Blade Runner series was in the works and the first episode had already been written. Longtime fans of the franchise have been waiting to learn more details ever since, and now, Deadline has given us a major update. Scott is teaming up with Amazon Studios on the series, which is officially titled Blade Runner 2099.

As the name suggests, the show will take place 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, which hit theaters in 2017. Naturally, we can probably rule out appearances by Ryan Gosling’s K and Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard. So expect the series to introduce a new host of replicants and the blade runners tasked with hunting them down.

Silka Luisa is writing 2099 after previously showrunning Apple TV+’s Shining Girls, which will debut later this year. She will also executive produce the series alongside Scott, who might even direct the project if it actually gets picked up. According to Deadline, Amazon is currently fast-tracking episode scripts and figuring out production dates. The streamer is also currently filling out the series’ writers room.

Most recently, the Blade Runner mythos was expanded on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll with the release of Blade Runner: Black Lotus, a new anime series set between the original 1982 film and 2049. Alcon Entertainment’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are also working on the new series as executive producers with Michael Green, a co-writer on 2049. Ben Roberts, Cynthia Yorkin, and Scott Free Productions’ David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger will executive produce as well.
