Star Trek: Picard Shuts Down Production After COVID Outbreak

While Star Trek: Picard is just weeks away from its second season, production of the third season has hit a snag. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 50 people tested positive for COVID-19 on the set earlier this week. Consequently, Paramount+ has temporarily shut down production on the third season. Picard shuts down.

The report doesn’t directly state whether Patrick Stewart or any other cast members were infected. However, it does note that the outbreak “impacted multiple zones, including cast in zone A.” The report also mentions that Star Trek: Picard “has one of television’s biggest crews, numbering more than 450 staffers.” Regardless, losing so many crew members at once was bound to impact the production if it had continued.

This new wave of infections may be due to the Omicron variant which is reportedly more easily spread than other versions of COVID. THR’s story said that other shows have also had to shut down as well, including NCIS.

The good news is that Picard may be able to resume production next week. But for now, there’s no official return date.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 began production almost immediately after season 2 wrapped in September. The second season will hit Paramount+ in February. However, the exact date remains unannounced.
