Game of Thrones ‘Dunk and Egg’ Spinoff Gets a Writer-Producer

Though HBO Max hasn’t made an official announcement yet, Deadline reports today that the next Game of Thrones spinoff to move forward will be Tales of Dunk & Egg. It’s based on a series of novellas that stands at three so far: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. George R.R. Martin claims he will write more in the series, but we all know what happens when he says another book is coming. Let’s just say Game of Thrones fans may once again need to brace for a show that continues past the point the author has reached.

Steve Conrad will write and executive produce the new show. Conrad previously created the shows Patriot, Perpetual Grace LTD, and Ultra City Smiths. He was also the screenwriter for The Weather Man and The Pursuit of Happyness. With Dunk & Egg, he will take on the adventures of future king Aegon Targaryen (“Egg”) and future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”). Duncan, a former squire who dons the armor of his knight after the mentor’s death, takes on Egg as a squire. Martin wants the books to ultimately cover their entire lives, as Egg ultimately rises to his royal role.

Thus far, the only officially confirmed Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, debuts early next year. It will focus on a previous generation of Targaryens some 200 years before the story we know. Dunk & Egg takes place a century or so later, 90 years prior to Game of Thrones.
