It’s been well over two months since we’ve learned anything new about HBO Max’s plans for a Dead Boy Detectives series. But unlike its namesake sleuths, the project is far from dead. Variety is reporting that George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri will play the title characters in the series’ pilot. Additionally, Kassius Nelson has been cast as their longtime companion, Crystal Palace.
Dead Boy Detectives will mark Rextrew’s onscreen debut following his graduation from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He stars as Edwin Paine opposite Revri’s Charles Rowland. Both characters were introduced during Neil Gaiman’s Sandman run in the early ‘90s and later spun off into their own titles. Following their respective murders, Edwin and Charles’ spirits chose to stay on Earth and investigate supernatural crimes. They eventually found another ally in Crystal, a living person who works as a psychic medium.

Additionally, the filmmakers have added several other performers to the proposed series. The supporting cast includes Alexander Calvert as Thomas the Cat King; Briana Cuoco as Jenny, a “mildly punk” butcher and one of Jenny’s confidants; Jenn Lyon as Esther, an immortality-obsessed witch; Yuyu Kitamura as Niko, a boarding school student who dreams of joining the Dead Boys on their adventures; and Ruth Connell as the demonic Night Nurse.
Connell previously appeared as Night Nurse in the latest season of HBO Max’s Doom Patrol. However, the casting of Rextrew, Reviri, and Nelson confirms that Dead Boy Detectives will take place in its own universe. The third episode of Doom Patrol season 3 featured Ty Tennant and Sebastian Croft as Edwin and Charles, respectively. Madalyn Horcher also showed up alongside them as Crystal Palace. The episode’s co-writer, Steve Yockey, is writing and executive producing the Dead Boy Detectives pilot for HBO Max. Variety also confirms that production has already started.
