Marvel’s Hawkeye finally lets Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton take center stage. However, the ghost of one of his fellow Avengers looms large thanks to Rogers: The Musical. Although it probably doesn’t take up a lot of screentime, the Broadway-show-within-a-TV-show gives us one more reason to watch the highly-anticipated series. Now, Marvel boss Kevin Feige and director Rhys Thomas have explained how the fictional Captain America musical came to be.
Speaking to SYFY Wire, Feige revealed that the musical was “an idea early on about why [Clint] comes to New York.” In the series premiere, Clint arrives in the Big Apple with his kids to see the play, which recounts the role Steve Rogers played during the Chitauri’s invasion as depicted in The Avengers. Thomas added that the idea “was an innocent suggestion in one of our calls that [he] tried to backtrack on.” Regardless, Feige thought it had potential. And over time, it evolved from “a bit of a generic Christmas in New York [plot]” into something that better served the story.

Naturally, the play’s recreation of the Battle of New York features an actor playing Hawkeye. And according to Feige, it was important for Clint to see this representation of himself.”
“It gave us context for the opening episode, context for why he is in New York, and context for how Clint sees himself,” added Feige.
The first two episodes of Hawkeye will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24.
