Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Casts Uncle Iroh, Gyatso, and Zhao

The new live-action translation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has added three new performers to its ever-expanding cast. Deadline brings word that Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Lim Kay Siu, and Ken Leung have all booked key roles on the show.

Lee, who appeared opposite Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu on the Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, is playing Iroh, a retired Fire Nation general who is also the brother of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) and uncle of Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu). In the original series, Iroh serves as a mentor figure to Zuko after his father exiles him from their community. He also aids Zuko in his hunt for the Avatar, Aang, whose capture will restore his nephew’s honor in the eyes of their people.

Lim has joined the series as Gyatso, an Air Nomad monk and Aang’s own father figure. During his lifetime, he was known as the greatest airbender in the world and later passed his skills onto Aang. Lim is mainly known for his roles in Singaporean films. However, he has appeared in a few English-language releases, including 1999’s Anna and the King.

Finally, Leung will play Commander Zhao, a “scheming and ambitious” member of Fire Nation’s military who proved to be a daunting adversary to Aang and his friends throughout their journey. Zhao was also a rival of Zuko and sought to capture the Avatar for himself. Fans might recognize Leung from his roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Rush Hour. He also appeared on Lost and played Karnak on Marvel’s short-lived Inhumans series.

Additionally, Netflix has confirmed that the series has finally started production in Vancouver, teaming up with Pixmondo for the shoot. Filming will take place in a “custom-built” facility using the same technology used on The Mandalorian and The Midnight Sky.
