What If…? Director Addresses Plans For a T’Challa/Star-Lord Spinoff

Today’s What If…? finale officially marks the last time Chadwick Boseman will ever show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given how memorable his performances were, it’s not going to be easy to say goodbye to his take on T’Challa. And no one seems to understand this better than What If…? director Bryan Andrews and head writer A.C. Bradley.

While speaking with Variety about the first season as a whole, Andrews and Bradley recalled what it was like to work with Boseman on the series, which re-imagined T’Challa as an alternate version of Star-Lord.

“Chadwick had recorded his Star-Lord T’Challa stuff early,” said Andrews. “But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months, or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But we got him in time to have everything [for Season 1]. I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him — and also this new version of Star-Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”

Shortly before his first What If…? episode aired, Andrews revealed that the producers were seriously considering T’Challa/Star-Lord’s spinoff potential. Now, we have a better idea of what this project could have looked like. And it sounds like the creators haven’t given up on it yet.

“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew,” added Andrews. “We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”

All nine episodes of What If…? season 1 are now streaming on Disney+.
