Earlier this year, BBC announced that Doctor Who showunner Chris Chibnall will depart the series in 2022 alongside the current Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. However, the series has already found a new showrunner: Russell T Davies, the man who relaunched Doctor Who in 2005.
Via the official Doctor Who site, Davies will return to the franchise in 2023. That will also coincide with the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. Additionally, this means that Davies will choose who will play the next Doctor. Davies’ Bad Wolf outlet will produce the series with BBC Studios.
Davies had a four season run on Doctor Who that came to an end in 2009. His stint is widely credited with revitalizing the formerly dormant franchise. He also created two Doctor Who spinoff series: Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Davies also shared a statement about his comeback to the franchise.
“I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”
“It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home,” added Chibnall. “Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him – Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.”
