David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ first post-Game of Thrones TV show has found its first director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hong Kong filmmaker Derek Tsang has joined the duo’s upcoming adaptation of Three-Body Problem, based on the trilogy of Chinese sci-fi novels by Liu Cixin. Tsang will helm the first episode of the series.
Cixin’s books follow the human race as it prepares for an alien invasion. Although many humans are willing to defend their planet at all costs, others welcome the idea of an invasion, and an intra-species conflict ensues. THR also reports that Eiza Gonzalez is in talks to play a role in the series.
Tsang recently garnered rave reviews for his latest film, Better Days, which was nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Oscars. He previously made his solo directorial debut with Soul Mate in 2016.

Three-Body Problem is the first project to emerge from Benioff and Weiss’ new overall deal with Netflix. There hasn’t been a lot of new info about the series since it was announced last year. But Tsang’s hiring represents a key step in its development. Alexander Woo, who previously co-created AMC’s The Terror: Infamy, is also working with Benoff and Weiss on Three-Body Problem as a co-creator, writer, and executive producer.
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for Three-Body Problem.
