At the beginning of this year, Marvel’s Moon Knight series added Ethan Hawke to its cast as the show’s villain. The thought of an indie darling like Hawke joining the MCU makes Moon Knight one of the most highly-anticipated projects Marvel has in the works. And it sounds like Hawke is having the time of his life as filming continues in Budapest.
Hawke briefly discussed his work on the series during a virtual appearance on last night’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers. And although he’s been acting for nearly four decades, he said that Moon Knight has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.
“These are the best sets I’ve ever been on in my life,” said Hawke. “The costumes, the set, the production design, the cinematography, all those elements are kind of mind-boggling. So I have entered some alternate universe, and it is kind of interesting.”

The identity of Hawke’s villain is still a mystery. But when Meyers observed that his shoulder-length silver hair and aviator glasses make him a dead ringer for David Koresh, Hawke claimed that the infamous cult leader and Waco siege mastermind actually inspired his performance on the series. Additionally, Hawke revealed how Moon Knight’s star convinced him to come aboard in the first place.
“I heard about it from Oscar Isaac, who lives three blocks down the street from me in Brooklyn,” added Hawke. “I was at a coffee shop and he came up to me. He’s like, ‘Hey, I really liked The Good Lord Bird.’ I was like, ‘Oh, cool, yeah, I really like your work. You’re amazing.’ He’s like, ‘Hey, wanna be in the Moon Knight with me?’ I was like, ‘Yeah!’ So it happened the right way, you know?”
Marvel hasn’t announced a release date for Moon Knight. However, it’s expected to hit Disney+ sometime in 2022.
