All eyes are on the multiverse following the events of Loki’s season finale earlier this month. However, some Marvel fans are dwelling on another one of the episode’s highlights. Namely, the kiss between Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and his gender-swapped variant, Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino. Although it seemed like many viewers were shipping their characters from the get-go, others were put off by the fact that the God of Mischief was basically kissing himself. And it turns out that Di Martino wasn’t surprised by this reaction at all.
Di Martino addressed fan criticisms’ during a recent interview with The Wrap. She also explained her thoughts as to why the kiss made sense.
“I kind of expected it to be pretty split and some people to be really into it and just going along with it for the fact that it’s a sort of love story,” said Di Martino. “And then I knew there would be some skeptical people who weren’t sure. For me, it’s kind of an exploration of self-love. It’s not as straightforward as just two people falling for each other, who are versions of the same thing.”

The Loki finale memorably saw Sylvie killing Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains, causing the multiverse’s adjacent timelines to diverge and paving the way for the next phase of the MCU. But according to Di Martino, her character already has doubts about her actions, which might be explored in season 2.
“I think in the moments right after she’s killed him, she’s sort of waiting for some kind of relief, to feel better about everything,” added Di Martino. “And I think then her thoughts start to turn to what if he was telling the truth? What if I don’t have any free will? And what if a bazillion Bogeymen are about to come out and try and get me? So she’s just sort of waiting to see what happens.”
All six episodes of Loki’s first season are now streaming on Disney+.
