Marvel Will Have a Mini Studio For Future Animated Projects

Next month, Marvel Studios will branch out into animation with the release of What If…? on Disney+. There’s a lot of hype building for the MCU’s first animated foray. But as it turns out that this is just the beginning. While speaking with Variety at this year’s NALIP Media Summit, executive producer Victoria Alonso confirmed that Marvel is opening a smaller production house that will concentrate specifically on developing new animated projects.

“We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well,” said Alonso. “We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.”

What If…? was originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 alongside the rest of Marvel’s Phase Four slate. Like the comic that inspired it, the show will imagine alternate outcomes of famous MCU events. Many of these were teased in the series’ latest trailer, which premiered online earlier this month. Marvel previously confirmed that a second season of What If…? is already in the works.

Right now, there’s no telling what other animated shows (or movies) are on the docket. But it seems plausible that opening a “mini studio” will allow Marvel to create such projects in-house rather than farming them out to third parties like Australia’s Flying Bark Productions and Canada’s Squeeze Animation Studios, both of which worked on What If…?.

Alonso went on to confirm that even more live-action Marvel series, including Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye, will hit Disney+ by the end of this year. She also spoke further about how the streaming realm has benefited the larger MCU.

“When the chance of being a part of this streaming world came about, we were beyond excited because all of a sudden we could actually give the fans far more than 1/4 of a page or three cool moves,” added Alonso.

What If…? will premiere on Disney+ on August 11.
