Tom Hiddleston Reveals the Origin of Loki’s Passion for Knives

You wouldn’t expect Loki to be less attached to his weapons than his brother Thor. As much as the god of thunder loves Mjolnir, the god of mischief adores his knives. Over the years, fans saw Tom Hiddleston’s Loki using his beloved blades on plenty of occasions. Perhaps the most impactful was the time when he futilely attempted to stab Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Now, the British actor has finally revealed how the Northern god got his steel.

“The idea of throwing knives came from something that evolved out of a conversation with [Thor director] Kenneth Branagh, which is that Loki’s fighting style is quick, efficient, and lethal,” Hiddleston said while talking with EW. “That Thor was like a block of granite, but Loki was like the wind. You couldn’t really pin him down. Thor was solid, stable, immovable, and enormously powerful, and Loki was dancing around him like a sprite or as unpredictable as the wind. And then the knives, I suppose, stuck in the canon.”

Hiddleston added to the character that flashy knife-flip that fans saw recently in the Disney+ series. The origin of that move gets back to Thor: Ragnarok while the actor was shooting the sequence on the bridge with Idris Elba. Hiddleston then joked that it was by mere chance that he caught those knives without dropping none of them.

“It was a two-shot of us fighting these fantastic athletes that are the stunt guys,” he said. “And I ran out of choreography. Basically, I think I finished my moves before Idris, and he was still rolling, and I didn’t want to just be standing there like a lemon, not doing anything interesting. So I just flipped the knives, and caught them by chance.”

The first five episodes of Loki are streaming on Disney+. Episode 6 will premiere on Wednesday, July 14.
