It’s been well over a year since David Ramsey last showed up in The CW’s Arrowverse as John Diggle, but his return is finally upon us. After months of speculation, Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing confirmed that Ramsey will reprise his role in the series’ upcoming 12th episode.
Ramsey’s Arrowverse comeback was actually announced late last year, when news broke that he’d also be guest-starring on new episodes of The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow. However, Helbing teased the actor’s Superman & Lois appearance during a recent chat with CBR. He also shared which other Arrowverse characters he’d like to use on the show.
“I mean, I obviously have an affection for Flash,” said Helbing. “You know, I love [The Flash star] Grant [Gustin]. That would be a lot of fun. We’ll see! I think just the way that things evolved with our show and unintentionally being separated in a way that we have because of COVID, it really changed so many plans that we had. The further along we got, the harder it was to justify having a big explanation. It just felt so false. So that’s really where that came from.”

Helbing also discussed Ramsey’s directing work on Superman & Lois’ seventh episode, “Man of Steel,” which airs on May 25. Ramsey previously made his behind-the-camera debut on an episode of Arrow in 2019. And according to Helbing, it definitely helps that he’s already familiar with the show’s universe.
“Well, first, his chops as a director — he is fantastic,” added Helbing. “So I think he just has the skill set that you need, as somebody on a show that is as big as ours. You need somebody that’s as comfortable with shows that are as big as ours, and he’s been around it forever. Then he just brings his knowledge, because he’s from this world. So I think he speaks all the languages that you need to speak. It was really fun collaborating with him. So a lot of great ideas. I think what he did with Episode 7 is fantastic, and it’s one of my favorite episodes of the season.”
