Ewan McGregor Praises Realism of Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Over Prequels

Much to the Star Wars fans’ delight, the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series has finally entered production after a couple of delays. The story will bring back Ewan McGregor’s titular Master Jedi, taking over ten years after Revenge of the Sith. In a lengthy feature by THR, McGregor explained that he’s excited for his return to the Star Wars Universe, confessing that he’s “just in a much better place” for the role than in the prequel trilogy. And when it came to giving his opinion on that, the actor stated that he didn’t appreciate George Lucas’ overuse of bluescreens.

“After three or four months of that, it just gets really tedious — especially when the scenes are … I don’t want to be rude, but it’s not Shakespeare,” he added. “There’s not something to dig into in the dialogue that can satisfy you when there’s no environment there. It was quite hard to do.”

At the same time, he wanted to reassure fans that the upcoming series will feel “much more real” than the prequel trilogy, mainly thanks to the technological progress over the years.

“They project [the virtual backgrounds] onto this massive LED screen,” he said, referring to the StageCraft. “So if you’re in a desert, you’re standing in the middle of a desert. If you’re in the snow, you’re surrounded by snow. And if you’re in a cockpit of a starfighter, you’re in space. It’s going to feel so much more real.”

Disney has yet to announce the official release date for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
